Scouting Notes

Iowa keeps manufacturing NFL defensive backs, and Lutmer is next off the line — a homegrown three-star (No. 1232 nationally) who grew into the Hawkeyes' most versatile chess piece. His 2025 was a genuine arrival: 71 tackles, three interceptions and seven passes defensed over 12 games while bouncing between slot, safety and the CASH role, earning Phil Steele third-team All-America honors and a Lott Trophy watch-list nod. At 6-0, 205 he's built for the nickel/hybrid job the modern NFL actually staffs, and CBS put him in Round 1 of an early 2027 mock. However, treat that Round 1 placement as the outlier it is — one mock, and his full-time starting sample is a single season. What sells him is the tackling volume plus ball production from the slot, the hardest place to find both. Day 2 projection in the 2027 class as a plug-in nickel with special-teams-captain makeup.
